The Second Floor Phase of the Free Library of Philadelphia Central Library Expansion and Renovation reimagined the entire second floor of the historic structure. In addition to restoring, modernizing and enhancing the historical grandeur of the second floor public spaces, the project outlined four primary goals:

  1. Create an accessible, popular collection of materials that support lifelong learning needs and compliment the primary resources available in Special Collections
  2. Employ a team-based approach to innovation and space usage
  3. Reduce the footprint of staff space in public areas, with options for workspaces off the floor
  4. Activate collections and staff to engage our community through vibrant and robust programs

The team explored goals for each affected component, quantified associated space needs, aligned the needs with existing spaces to gain consensus on conceptual floor plan arrangements for each component.
