Lorain County Community College sought to renovate the existing Health Sciences Building to accommodate its Allied Health & Nursing programs. The previous facilities were undersized, outdated, and in many cases adapted from spaces not originally designed for their current functions. The renovation expanded Nursing labs to support increased enrollment, new equipment, and flexible class arrangements; adapted Dental Hygiene spaces to accommodate medical gases; added Diagnostic Medical Technology areas for scanning units, a washroom, changing area, and lecture/demonstration functions; created a dedicated operating room simulation for Surgical Technology; and provided minor A/V enhancements to the already updated Physical Therapist Assistant spaces.
The project required balancing the diverse needs of multiple academic programs, each with unique requirements, while creating modern learning environments that support healthcare education. Bostwick Design Partnership worked closely with stakeholders to reimagine the HS Building and develop spaces that align with current professional standards and future growth.
For Nursing, the team introduced an innovative modular lab design, providing flexibility to accommodate varying class sizes and optimize the use of resources and faculty. Across all departments, updated labs and classrooms were designed to foster collaboration, simulation-based learning, and hands-on training with modern equipment.
Results:
- Delivered renovated classrooms and labs tailored to the needs of Nursing, Dental Hygiene, Diagnostic Medical Technology, Surgical Technology, and Physical Therapy programs.
- Created a modular lab design for Nursing to allow flexible configurations and maximize teaching efficiency.
- Introduced dedicated simulation environments, including an operating room for Surgical Technology.
- Enhanced facilities with modern finishes, updated technology, and specialized infrastructure.
- Supported Lorain County Community College in preparing healthcare students with the skills, flexibility, and training environments required in today’s workforce.
