The goal of TechCentral was to consolidate the library’s technology in an accessible, welcoming environment. At this space, patrons can interact with librarians and technology specialists, learn new digital skills, discover emerging tools and software, and use computers for personal, educational, or professional applications. The space is user-friendly and relevant, while at the same time flexible enough to accommodate future technological advances.
The former staff-only desk was removed to allow for new service points where staff and patrons can work together. The previously overpowering patterns and surfaces have been softened by new finishes and furnishings. Spatial transformation includes areas for solo or collaborative work and a TechToyBox where patrons are encouraged to come learn about the latest technologies.
Surfaces were shaped by the flow of visitors through TechCentral. Planes push, pull and bend to the influence of this flow, creating new patterns and ‘rooms’ within the larger area, intuitively leading people to shared spaces. Multimedia and lighting are seamlessly integrated, informing visitors and focusing attention where help is available. The resulting combination of form, surface, color and light makes TechCentral a vital new destination in downtown Cleveland.
This design celebrates opportunity in an informed community, and elevates the library as a forward thinking institution capable of reimagining itself.
