This revitalization is called a “walipini,” which is a Bolivian term for an underground or “pit” greenhouse. This type of structure creates a more energy efficient and cost-efficient greenhouse for year-round growing using the stable temperatures of the soil underground. The greenhouse will be naturally heated and cooled by the earth. It will be used to grow herbs and produce year-round to support the Neighborhood Network’s farmer’s market, urban agriculture education, and food insecurity programs. The Walipini is a way to further the SSJNN mission of providing leadership, advocating for local residents and partners with the broader community to develop opportunities for both personal growth and neighborhood revitalization.
