Flo Fabrizio Ice Center
Erie Zoological Society
“best ice in Erie.”
Historically known as the “best ice in Erie,” The Erie Zoological Society has experienced a significant loss of both income and community the past two years that the Flo Fabrizio Ice Center has been closed. In recognition of this vital amenity for the Erie hockey and skating community, a state-issued RACP grant of $2 million was provided to the Zoo for a new ice-refrigeration system, ice-rink floor, interior renovations, and new entrance.
Due to the extreme constraints of this project, Bostwick utilized IDP – Integrated Project Delivery at the forefront of schematic design, igniting collaboration between the owner, architect, and consultants. A detailed work-plan was drafted for daily milestones to ensure the project stayed on track without sacrificing the quality of design. Further, a full cost-estimate was completed at the end of each phase, breaking out “alternate costs” to secure base bids were within the RACP grant.
In an effort to spread limited funds as far as possible, the renovation of Flo Fabrizio Ice Center utilizes its existing structure in a fresh, contemporary approach. The exterior renovations focus on the entry vestibule, re-using the existing a-frame structure with modern finishes to provide maximum sunlight and transparency into the arena. The sleek glassy entrance is balanced with a warm wood ceiling, creating an exciting new experience within the existing structure. Interior upgrades include new painting, flooring, lighting, and ceiling finishes focused on both durability and bright, reflective aesthetics.
